Van Koughnett Family History

From Paul Russell "On the Origin of the Family Name, Von Gachnang"

http://genforum.genealogy.com/coughnet/messages/4.html

"Since the COUGHNET family originated in Switzerland in the Middle Ages in the village of Gachnang, spelling variations for the surname have been evolving. The original form of the surname was VON GACHNANG, granted to the knights of the village, probably by the Dukes of Wuerttemberg. However, not long after being enobled, the family lost its property, but maintained the surname. They moved from Gachnang to the surrounding villages near Zurich and to Zurich itself, where they were well-known and possessed rights as citizens. At the time of the Thirty Years War (1618-48), they migrated to Alsace, where one ancestor used the name VON GOCHNAT. For the next ... hundred years until the departure of Johann Eberhard VON GOCHNAT from Colmar to Philadelphia in 1751, the primary variation of the name was VON GOCHNAT. In the British Colonies, the name was once again adapted to local spelling conventions: VON KOCHNET, VAN KOUGHNET, COUGHNET, COUGHNUT, CONANT, COCONUT [sic!], KOCHNET, CONAT."

Walter VON GACHNANG was killed in the Appenzeller War in the service of the Princes of Austria on the Feast of Corpus Christi, 1405. - Paul Russell, http://www.angelfire.com/mi2/tree/origin.html

By 1405 the abbot had found another ally and was ready to retake his land. Frederick IV, Duke of Austria provided the abbot with two Austrian armies to attack Appenzell.

On 17 June 1405, the main army marched into Stoss Pass on the border of Appenzell and there met the Appenzell army. Following a brutal battle, the Austrian army was forced to retreat. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appenzell_Wars

The first Continental Congress met in Philadelphia in 1774. This historic gathering examined the relationship between the colonies and England. Out of this meeting came a directive to Patriots for establishment of "Committees of Safety" in each town or county to guard against the aims of the Patriots. With these committees, Congress was sanctioning the persecution of Loyalists since they were given the power to apprehend any civilians suspected of sympathizing with England.

Many families in the Mohawk Valley became divided during the Revolution as members decided whether they would be loyal to Britain or join with the Revolutionaries. Neighbours became enemies as they were forced to declare their allegiance.
